Dr. Bates was born and raised in Michigan.  She attended medical school at Mid­western University – Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine.  After completing her degree in 1995, Dr. Bates moved to Tucson and completed her internship and residency at the University of Arizona.  She then served as Chief Medical Resident for one year before completing a Fellowship in Cardiovascular Medicine.  She is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American Society of Echocardiography.

After completing her postgraduate education, Dr. Bates practiced cardiology in an academic setting for three years.  She was a staff cardiologist for Southern Arizona VA Health Care System, an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of Arizona, and actively involved in medical research.  Her work in evaluating the effects of "statins" in congestive heart failure has been published in major medical journals.  In 2003 Dr. Bates returned to the University of Arizona for a one-year Fellowship in Cardiac Imaging.

Dr. Bates joined The Heart Center of Southern Arizona in 2004.  In addition to general cardiology and diagnostic catheterization, Dr. Bates has a special interest in non-invasive cardiac imaging including echocardiography and nuclear cardiology.

Dr. Bates is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, and Echocardiography.  She is an avid cyclist and enjoys music, traveling, cooking, and reading.
